Just a bit late.

I was a bit busy, so I didn’t have chance to wish you all a Merry Christmas (and your related festival in other religions) and a happy new year - so here I am apologising! I’m sure most of you had a merry one. I was lucky enough to recieve some awesome gifts! Including a TimeCapsule and a WD PassPort HD! Yes, I know Christmas is about family and not the presents, but sometimes, it’s about the gifts!

So, what did you guys get?

Why I’m leaving LoveFilm

I’ve had a LoveFilm subscription since the beginning of the summer to allow me to watch a films and games during the boring weekdays/ends. I got a cool two month free trial, two months with the offer that I got! It was awesome, so I rented quite a few cool games and movies including; I am Legend, Cloverfield, Wall-E (Game). The service is good, with quick delivery, awesome customer support and a easy to use website. I simply emailed them with an issue I was having and they gave me and extra disc for free.

But recently, I found the service was slowing down, and the films weren’t being delivered as quick as they could. I then discovered that they had been purchased by Tesco (a supermarket in the UK). I simply thought that £14.99 a month for unlimited DVD & Game rental (2 at anytime) is allot of money for the service that they offer.

Does anyone else use LoveFilm and what do you think of it? How do you get your films, and how do you watch them? I’d like to know!

NetBooks: Roundup

Over the last couple of weeks, I have been taking a strong interest into the latest NetBooks. In you unsure what a netbook is, I’ll explain it for you.

A NetBook is striped down Laptop, with little “extra’s”. It’s a low powered and small! With the average screen size of nine inches, your not going to be using this as your first computer. Alot of larger computer companies have stared playing the netbook market including Acer, Asus, Advent, Dell, HP, MSI and Samsung.

Most of them all contain:

  • SSD or 120/250GB HD
  • 1.6Ghz Intel Atom or higger.
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8″ - 10″ Screen
  • WiFi
  • Webcam

These are very appealing to people on the market to buy a cheap, sensible, portable Laptop as an extra to their already powerful desktop computer.

The Acer One

One of the best netbooks on the market and certainly one of the cheapest for the low-end model. With a cool white or blue finish, this is certainly an excellent choice. Reports have shown that the SSD model is very slow. The model above it however the model with a 120GB HD has been getting praising reports.

Asus EEE-PC

The main machine to start of the trend and is still one of the man competitors in the game. Compared to some of the other netbooks, It can be overpriced. The eee-pc to my does not look that good, and other models look alot better. But the hardware is better than other devices.

Advent Netbook Family

One of the quieter brands here in the UK, yet still produces pretty hefty machines at low prices. Looks good with a minimalistic look and approach to their models. I’d pick one up, but i haven’t seen any decent reviews on them yet, if someone can point me in the right direction, that would be excellent.

Dell Inspiron Mini 9

Even dell has had a bash at the market, coming in with a machine. Compared to the rest of the other machines, it’s rather pathetic. You can’t have a normal physical hard drive, and instead SSD only which is a blow to people who are wanting to store a bit more than their iTunes library.. Over here in the UK, it is overpriced compared to the other machines that you can purchase.

HP Minibook

The most powerful and beautiful machine, but seriously overpriced. But, there are several reasons for why it has such a high price point. The keyboard - it is allot better in comparison to the others. The keyboard is nearly full size and has large keys. The display is also noticeably better with much more vibrant compared to the Acer & Asus.

MSI Wind

One of best, yet is one of the most unknown. Most people recognise the Wind for the ease of putting Leopard onto the machine (Yes, Apple Leopard!) - it has a fantastic battery life, display and keyboard. A range of features which in comparison are allot better compared to the Acer & Advent

Samsung

Samsung has not yet released their models over here in the UK yet so I have been unable to test them for myself - but looking at the review, it scored quite high. With a decent sized keyboard and a quality display! Decent hard drive sizes and a overall winner - the price is certainly high over the rest.

Considering a NetBook, which one are you thinking to get? or have you got one? Leave me a comment!

I won RMPC!

A couple of weeks ago, I entered the Rupert Maspero Photographer Competition not thinking anything of it really. This week revealed that I was the winner! You can see my entry here

Why Should You Enter?

Show casing your name, your work and your effort - that is the key. You worked hard to get those pictures the way they are, and worked hard to buy the equipment (if your me anyway). There are lost of Photography competitions online, and locally.

Pffttt… I’ll never win anything..

I think I’ve injured my self with disbelief - I didn’t even think anything of it and to my amazement, I won! You don’t have the most biggest and the best camera ever. A local person won a competition here with a disposable camera. Yes, a decent camera can help sometimes but not always.

Just enter, have some fun, and just have a good time. It’s about taking part not winning.

Internet memes - People, keep up!

Recently, over the last year more and more internet memes have been creeping more and more into general conversation. Examples of these can be;

  • Pwn - Own
  • Noob - Debbie
  • PenguinHead
  • MacFag
  • LAG!
  • RickRoll
Explaining these too people is hard. I spent a whole nearly a whole hour explaining to my mum what PWN, what it stood for, and when to use it. We all need to remember the barrier of communication and people may not necessarily understand the jargon that we are using in everyday life.
Although, friends have been discovering that people use internet memes without even realising it. My most favourite in our house is the FAIL. Is gets used everywhere.
(PenguinHead = Linux Head).

Trying Film For The First Time

After nabbing my nifty Olympus OM-10 off ebay for only a few quid, I’ve discovered that using film is actually pretty awesome. It allows you to understand the importance of how to preserve the film that you have left and how to use it efficiently. With my D80, there’s none of that rubbish - you get as many as you can in the time that you have. There’s no file limits to worry about on film, there’s no downloading and editing and then tweaking it to make that perfect picture.

It’s just so effortless on film, it’s just point, focus and pressing the shutter. ISO isn’t an issue for me. I just set for 200 and that’s all that seems to work for me. I know people who go nuts and start spinning around in circle shouting, what’s with all this noise! I can see why people change back to film now that I’ve started using it.

I recommend  (if you have some time & money to spare) you go on ebay, and take a look at some camera’s. Quickly flickr search the model and see if you like the results. I’d go for a 35mm camera, otherwise you’ll be stick in the world of medium format. (which is fine) - but hefty on the wallet to process.

Update: Charlie has a nice article on it too here.

My temporay new home

I’ve finally got round to sorting out a new home on the Internet, aka, my blog. I’m sure you hear this everywhere but I’m special and you should already know that. I’ll be blogging everything here from Tech stuff, to how i feel on a certain subject.

I haven’t really blogged in a seriously long time, probably about 5 months now and I really want to get back into it. So here I am trying hard.

I have a few goals set for this place, you know - to keep the dust off and the gremlins away.

  • 1 new story each week, if possible. I’m a college student, I have homework - enough said.
  • I like newsreaders, If i reach 20 RSS readers, I will make a celebratory video and POSSIBLY give something away from the goodness of my heart.
  • Interaction with readers. I here by promise to respond to your comments and answer any questions that you may have. My email is okbayliss at gmail dot com.

and that’s about it. Like i said if you have any questions email me or hit me up on my aim which is bayliss_@mac.com (that is NOT my email).

Cheers, Bayliss.
